Easter Eggs Video Games That Can’t Easily Be Found

Most of us are familiar with Easter Eggs hidden in movies, but what about video games? Yup. There’s actually quite a few and they date all the way back to the video games of the 1980’s. Nonetheless not all video game Easter Eggs are created equal. From obscure references and special codes to hidden areas and the just plain inexplicable, these Easter Eggs sometimes took decades to find, frustrating players and game developers alike.

Fallout New Vegas
The fourth installment in the massively popular Fallout franchise, New Vegas had us heading back into the nuclear wasteland yet again. In addition to all the mutant scavengers you’d expect to come across, if you work things right you could uncover a reference to one of Hollywood’s favorite archaeologists. If you have the wild wasteland trait, and you might just come across a refrigerator containing the remains and signature hat of one Indiana Jones. It’s a clear reference to the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, only in this world Indy didn’t survive that nuclear blast.

Grand Theft Auto V
It goes without saying that the Grand Theft Auto franchise is a favorite with gamers. It also goes without saying that Bigfoot is a favorite among conspiracy theorists. Add the two together and you get a popular Easter Egg in a game loaded with other hidden gems. You can first find Bigfoot during the predator mission where he is visible through the thermal scope if you look in just the right spot. If that’s not good enough, once the game storyline is 100 percent complete, there’s a hidden mission where you head to the forest and hunt someone dressed up in a sasquatch costume. Yup! That is really in the game.

android
Wasteland 2
Send out to investigate the post-apocalyptic world, Wasteland 2 has many things in common with other post-nuclear war exploration games. Except for that big red button in the sewer that didn’t seem to do much until now. It turns out that after you push the button found in the sewer, it opens up another area complete with a character named Aaron Chwatt. There’s a second red button and when you push it, the ground shakes and Chwatt takes off after announcing that everyone is doomed. Look up Aaron Chwatt and you’ll see it’s the real name of American comedian, Red Buttons. Yup! It’s a whole just a big joke you know, the kind you’d expect your dad to tell.

android

Goldeneye 007
Considered one of the greatest video games of all time, Goldeneye 007 opened the way for open-world first-person shooters and set the standard for future releases. Yet, right off the bat, gamers lightly missed one Easter egg that was left in by game developers and can only be accessed by special codes. Across the water from the dam in the opening level is an unfinished island complete with watchtower and turret. It was meant to be a part of the level but deadlines meant developers had to leave it unfinished.

android
Batman Arkham City
As you’d expect, Rocksteady Studios put Easter Eggs in their release of Batman Arkham City. But some were very well-hidden. A big one involved the villain Calendar Man. By setting your console or computer day to December 13th 2004, the date Rocksteady Studios was founded, you trigger some interesting new dialogue from the imprisoned Calendar Man. He talks about earlier work, a reference to Arkham Asylum and then talks at the end of days. A likely reference to the next game in the series Arkham Knight.

android
Halo 3
Game developers often hide references or messages to family or friends within the games that they’ve created and halo 3 is no different. Nearly seven years after its release, a gamer found that if you press down on both thumb sticks during the games load screen, you can see the message “Happy Birthday Lauren” written in the blue ring on the screen. Apparently it only appears when the console calendar is on December 25th, so yeah, someone clearly had way too much time on their hands.

android
Splinter Cell Double Agent
If you’re looking for an Easter Egg that is not only well hidden but just truly bizarre, then you’ve come to the right place. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent is for the most part your typical action stealth game that you would expect from the franchise. Then there are the five baby alien seals. Yes one of the hit admissions discovered four years after the game was released, requires players to undertake a number of tasks to save the aliens named Muffin, Pepperoni, Vanilla, cookie and Buddy from captivity. We couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried.

android
The Apprentice
There’s a good chance many of you have never played or even heard of this nineteen nineties game because it came out on the failed Philips CDI game console. For its time, the Apprentice had crisp graphics, good sound and entertaining gameplay. To spice things up, the developers included some interesting level endings which can be accessed by entering codes. These included animality and nudality finished screens, which were likely meant as a joke on the Mortal Kombat series of games. Up for the nude ending and you were treated to a naked cartoon figure in a variety of poses.

android

Wave Race: Blue Storm
This Nintendo Game Cube game saw players face off against opponents on the waves using jet skis. With decent graphics and gameplay, this second installment of Wave race was received well. Interest was rejuvenated several years after its launch, however, when players found out about an alternate in game commentary unlocked in the audio menu. Activated and instead of hearing the usual “Awesome”- “Good Job” commentary, you get nothing but a string of sarcasm and insults bound to make you feel really good about yourself.

android

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
If you’ve ever played multiplayer in Call of Duty Black Ops 2, then you know some of the maps have some strange features. Take the Nuketown map for example. Filled with 1950s style architecture and vehicles, there is also a bunch of creepy mannequin scattered about. They have a purpose. Shoot all the heads off of all of the mannequins as quickly as you can and a console appears at which you can play old school activision classics like Pitfall and River Raid. All in glorious 8-bit quality.
